Who am I?
My name is Alicia Franklin. I am a 34-year-old female who was born and grew up in Kentucky. I am a survivor of childhood physical, verbal and sexual abuse due to a drug addicted parent. I have survived 2 suicide attempts as a preteen. I have spent years of my teen years in therapy to deal with depression and suicidal issues.
Having divorced parents was truly a blessing for me. I had one amazing parent to turn to in times of struggle. I had friends and an amazing church family who kept me going even when I felt that I could not move forward. I turned to writing and church in times of extreme distress to try to bring some clarity to my thoughts and life.
I eventually overcame my past. I graduated from high school and then went on to college. I earned at BA in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice. School was easy so I was the first in my family to make the jump to college. Once in college I found that I really wanted to do something with my life that would help others.
I have worked in the prison settings in the past and for the last 9-years I have dedicated my life to child protection services. I found that I had a past not far from what some of these children had and that I could show them as a living example that you can overcome and that there is hope. If I can do it anyone can do it.
I have had friends and loved ones who have lost battles with addiction, depression and suicide. It is always a struggle to learn to adjust and how to live without them there.
I LOVE to read and to write in my spare time which is not often. I also love to shoot pool but I am HORRIBLE at it but I have fun with it so that it what matters. I am very passionate about photography and it gives me so much pleasure to capture amazing sights and moments and share them with others. I am a fanatic for horror movies and I mean true horror films, not just the “gore” flicks which I could take or leave. I married an amazing man I love with all my heart and though him have inherited 2 amazing grown step children, their significant others and 3 truly awesome grandchildren. On top of helping children and families I also have a love of animals. I have 4 rescued shelter dogs and 1 cat. I enjoy meeting new people and exploring new places.
I think that about sums me up in a short version.
Alicia was recently picked up to write for By Chaney’s Hands. Anything that she contributes will go into our newsletter once we get that going as well. We still need more writers! We cannot only have one. I am very pleased with the background of this one, and with where she is in life. As my “first” writer… I could not be happier. Now we need to continue to move in this positive direction.
